Urban Village is continuing its expansion in the care sector after revealing plans for a 64-bedroom senior living development in Birmingham.

Urban Village Healthcare today unveiled its plans for a £10.8 million purpose-built care scheme at Rubery Lane, Rubery, have been given outline planning consent by Birmingham City Council.

Birmingham-based Urban Village Healthcare acquired the site of the former Cock Inn pub in a £1.6 million deal. Once complete, the development will be let to Bracebridge Care Group for a minimum of 25 years.

The scheme will feature 64 en-suite bedrooms with communal facilities such as a lounge, hairdressers and cinema, with associated parking and gardens.

Urban Village Group chief executive Nick Sellman: “We have made it clear that we are on a mission to improve the senior living provision in this country so that more elderly people can enjoy their twilight years in high quality homes.

“Our development at Rubery will provide 64 excellent en-suite bedrooms with associated facilities, and we have plans to deliver many more such developments. There is an urgent and growing need for new, high quality care homes.”

He added: “As we see the current ‘baby boom’ generation, currently aged 55 to 75, enter old age, the over-85 population will grow from 1.6 million in 2020 to 3.7 million by 2050.

“It is expected that all age groups over the age of 60 will increase in number; most substantially, those aged over 80 years. With old age, the level of disability and dependency increases rapidly and impacts significantly on the demand for care services, with around 400,000 older people are in care homes in the UK. Urban Village Healthcare is determined to help meet this demand.”
