Plans to develop a multi-million-pound canalside care home in Lancashire have been unveiled. Urban Village Healthcare is continuing its expansion in the care sector with plans for a senior living development, with 77 en-suite bedrooms, in Blackburn. It has submitted a planning application to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

The purpose-built care scheme will be created on a canalside site at Eleanor Street. Each of the four floors will have its own external terrace on the northern corner of the building, taking advantage of the views over the canal to the town centre beyond.

It will feature communal facilities such as a lounge, hairdressers and a gym, with associated parking and gardens. The site backs on to the Leeds Liverpool Canal. All the town centre amenities are within walking distance.

Once completed, the care home will be let to Bracebridge Care Group for a minimum of 25 years.

Urban Village Group chief executive Nick Sellman: “Our development at Blackburn forms part of our mission to improve senior living provision in this country and will be a fantastic facility for families in the region. With old age, the level of disability and dependency increases rapidly and impacts significantly on the demand for care services, with around 400,000 older people in care homes in the UK. Urban Village Healthcare is determined to help meet this demand.”
